Green Valley Genealigical Society
Genealogy Today

Genealogy Today is a bi-weekly column in the Green Valley News, our local newspaper in Green Valley, AZ. Betty Lou Malesky, writer, started the column in 2005. Recently, she decided to retire and turned over the column to Rebecca McCreary, another GVGS member and current Editor of the organization's Past Tracks newsletter. Betty's last article appeared on March 19, 2017 which you can find in the 2017 Articles.

Ms. McCreary's first article for Genealogy Today appeared in the newspaper on April 2, 2017 and is now available here for viewing and downloading. We look forward to her insights and information on all things genealogy.

Rebecca McCreary,  Biography

Becky McCreary has been a reader and writer all her life. She was a stay-at-home-mom and at age 40 started college at an Indiana University extension in her home town, Richmond, Indiana. During that time she wrote for the college paper and was a freelance writer for the local daily paper. Her reporting assignments ranged from local school board meetings to county fair events to business features.

A few years later, she began working at Ford Electronics & Refrigeration (a wholly-owned subsidiary of Ford Motor Company) editing the monthly employee newsletter, photographing industrial machines, and writing news releases. In the meantime, she worked on her family genealogy. She still has those first bits of paper where she scribbled notes during hurried visits to a library. Thankfully they weren’t discarded, because some of the names she thought were not her family were actually misspellings of surnames.

Becky and her husband Paul are members of the Green Valley Genealogical Society. Becky has been the newsletter editor since October 2015 and began authoring the semi-monthly Genealogy Today column in Green Valley News April 2, 2017.
