This month, GVGS member Moreen Ferdie will open our eyes to Newspaper Research. Newspapers are a great source of family history details, giving us facts and stories of our ancestor's lives. Her presentation will show us how to look at different facts one can learn about their ancestors in newspapers, how newspapers share stories about our ancestors' lives, and the variety of newspaper resources available to help with your family research. Ms. Ferdie has been researching her family history for a number of years and she recently completed the American Records and Methodology Program at the National Institute for Genealogical Studies. She also leads the GVGS Special Interest Group on Jewish Genealogy.
 
Following Ms. Ferdie's presentation, GVGS members will have their annual Holiday Party.

Our guest speaker this month, Nicole Dyer, will present Strategies to Use When You Hit a Road Block. Researching your genealogy can be difficult. When records don't seem to contain the evidence you need to add the next generation to your family tree, what can you do? This class is about the research method that professional genealogists use to complete difficult client projects. Ms. Dyer is a genealogist lecturer and creator of FamilyLocket.com. She is also co-author of "Research Like A Pro: A Genealogist's Guide.
 
This month's meeting will also include the installation of new Board Members and a Thank You to departing Board Members.

Pinal County Genealogists 2019 Annual Workshop  (Workshop)

Pinal County Genealogists will host their 16th Annual Workshop on Saturday, January 26, 2019. Check-in will open at 8:00AM and the first session will start at 9:00AM. There will be 20 sessions to include basic favorites and classes for seasoned researchers and a Q&A Forum ending the day's activities. 2019 Annual Seminar: Growing Your Family Tree - featuring Judy Russell, the Legal Genealogist  (Seminars)

Judy Russell is a genealogist with a law degree who writes and lectures on topics ranging from using court records in family history to understanding DNA testing. Topics for this event are:

  • After the Courthouse Burns: Rekindling Family History through DNA

Gena Philibert-Ortega, our featured speaker from our 2018 Seminar, will present a program on The Anatomy of BMD: What You Don't Know About Vital Records. Vital Records: it's one of the first record sets you look for in the hunt for your ancestors. But do you know everything about those records you seek? What do you do when no records exist? This presentation looks at the history of vital records in the U.S., the variations of those records, and the alternatives. Ms. Philibert-Ortega is an author, researcher, and instructor whose focus is genealogy, social and women's history. Her published works include 3 books, numerous articles in magazines and online, and she is the editor of the Utah Genealogical Association's magazine Crossroads.

NGS 2019 Family History Conference – "Journey of Discovery"  (Conferences)

The National Genealogical Society's 2019 conference includes more than 150 unique lectures on topics such as vital records and religious records, migration and immigration, U.S. census and military records, land records and maps, court records, ethnic resources, government documents, using DNA testing, technology for genealogy, and much more. Conference registration begins Dec. 1, 2018 – you can also register for workshops, tours, meals, and other special conference events. Every conference attendee receives a digital syllabus of more than 600 pages that includes each handout provided for every lecture.
